Gonzalo Goytisolo

Artist Statement

I think that far from being a simple expression of reality, or a way to certitude, realistic figuration is the most elaborate form of pictorial fiction, making it a profoundly unreal artistic genre. This paradoxical nature is what appeals to me about its practice: not as a celebration of the real, but rather for its instrumental possibilities in questioning not only the truth of what is portrayed and the artifice of its portrayal, but the concept of objective reality itself.

More interested in how things relate to one another than in their specificity, my work strives to present the real as a narrative artifice of experience: I paint not reality but about it, and our need of fiction to give it meaning.
